3. It’s More Than Just Country Music
While country music is the city's backbone, Nashville’s musical soul is incredibly diverse. You can find jazz, blues, rock, and gospel all within a few blocks of each other.
One "must-visit" that often gets overlooked by casual tourists is the National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM). Located right on Broadway, this high-tech, immersive museum tells the story of how African American music: from spirituals to hip-hop: shaped the entire American soundtrack. It’s an eye-opening and inspiring way to spend an afternoon that goes beyond the cowboy boots and rhinestones.
4. Nashville Hot Chicken is a Rite of Passage
You cannot leave this city without trying Nashville Hot Chicken. But a word of warning: "medium" in Nashville is often "extra hot" everywhere else.
Legendary spots like Hattie B’s or Prince’s Hot Chicken (the original!) are the go-to places. If you aren't a fan of spice, don't worry: most places offer a "Southern" or "Plain" version that is just as delicious without the fire. Pro tip: many of these spots have long lines, so consider ordering ahead for a picnic at a nearby park to keep your planning stress-free.
5. Know the Difference: The Ryman vs. The Opry
Many first-time visitors get the Ryman Auditorium and the Grand Ole Opry confused. Here’s the breakdown:
- The Ryman Auditorium: Located downtown, this is the "Mother Church of Country Music." It was the original home of the Opry and is widely considered one of the best acoustic venues in the world.
- The Grand Ole Opry House: This is the current home of the legendary radio show, located about 20 minutes east of downtown near the Opryland Resort.
Both are worth a visit. If you can catch a show at the Ryman, do it: the history in that room is palpable. If you want the full "variety show" experience, head out to the Opry House.
6. Explore the Neighborhoods
Broadway is fun for a night (or three), but Nashville’s true character shines in its neighborhoods.
- The Gulch: Trendy, upscale, and home to the famous "What Lifts You" wings mural. Great for high-end shopping and brunch.
- 12 South: A walkable, charming strip perfect for coffee, boutique shopping, and seeing how the locals live.
- Germantown: One of the oldest neighborhoods, now home to some of the city's most innovative and award-winning restaurants.
- East Nashville: The "cool" part of town with a more indie, vintage vibe and great dive bars.
7. The "Bachelorette Capital" Factor
You’re going to see them: groups of women in matching t-shirts and pink cowboy hats riding around on "party tractors" or pedal taverns. Nashville has earned the title of the Bachelorette Capital of the World.
If you’re looking for a quiet, romantic retreat, you might want to steer clear of the main drag on Broadway during peak weekend hours. However, if you embrace the "group party" energy, it adds to the festive atmosphere that makes Nashville so unique.
8. Getting Around (and Why You Might Not Need a Car)
Nashville’s downtown is very walkable, but the city as a whole is quite spread out. Rideshare services like Uber and Lyft are plentiful and usually the easiest way to hop between neighborhoods.
If you want a more scenic route, the Old Town Trolley is a "hop-on, hop-off" service that hits all the major tourist spots. It’s a great way to see the Parthenon (a full-scale replica located in Centennial Park) without worrying about parking: which can be notoriously expensive in the city center.
9. Book Your Reservations Early
Nashville is a "reservation city." Because it is such a popular spot for weekend getaways, the top restaurants and attractions book up weeks (and sometimes months) in advance.
Whether you’re eyeing a table at a James Beard award-winning spot in Germantown or tickets for a tour of Historic RCA Studio B, don't wait until you arrive. A little bit of smart travel planning goes a long way here.
10. Free Music is Everywhere
One of the best things about Nashville is that you don’t have to spend a fortune to hear world-class music. Beyond the honky-tonks, you’ll find live music in hotel lobbies, coffee shops, and even at the airport.
During the summer months, check out "Musicians Corner" at Centennial Park for free outdoor concerts. It’s a great way to experience the local talent in a more relaxed, family-friendly setting while enjoying some of the city's beautiful green spaces.
Creating Unforgettable Memories
Nashville is a city that invites you to be a part of the song. It’s a place where history meets modern luxury, and where every street corner has a story to tell. Whether you’re there for the history, the food, or the non-stop rhythm of Broadway, a weekend in Music City is something you won't soon forget.
Sometimes, the best part of traveling is realizing how much more of the world there is to see: and how much fun it is to plan that next big adventure.
